For love or money
What makes us happy? Not money, according to the index of well-being from Oxford Economics. It found that even quadrupling your income causes little increase to a sense of contentedness. The researchers make the startling observation that sleeplessness and a deeply unsatisfactory sex life are likely causes of misery. Who’d have thought it? They say that rich and close personal relationships and good support networks are the biggest determinants of how well we live, while people who have been in debt, drank heavily and socialised less often were likely to be more unhappy. The strongest indicator of a broader sense of well-being is a good night’s sleep. But if the happiest people spend so much time in the bedroom, it’s hardly surprising they don’t make any money.
