Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright’s follow-up to the cult comedy-horror Shaun of the Dead (and the second chapter in the Cornetto Trilogy) reunites Pegg with Nick Frost in the story of two policemen who uncover a conspiracy in a Somerset village. Timothy Dalton is a sinister triumph as a millionaire baddy. Sharp, funny and with explosive action scenes, it’s a very British action-comedy that does everything it should. 5STAR, 9.00PM ★★
Film plots don’t come much more simple, or dumber, than this blazingly violent Denzel Washington movie that makes Liam Neeson’s Taken franchise look like Taxi Driver. After helping a teenage prostitute (Chloë Grace Moretz) free herself from a den of snarling pimps, mild-mannered Mccall (Washington) turns avenging angel. If you like it loud, and unsubtle, this might be for you. FILM4, 11.35PM ★★★★
This winner of the Cannes 2013 Palme d’or, is an unmissable – if, at times, explicit – drama of French lesbian lovers. On every level it’s attention-grabbing. Adèle (Adèle Exarchopoulos), a Lille high-school student whose steps into adulthood we follow, is hungry for experience. Is Emma (Léa Seydoux), a blue-haired art student, the whole answer or only part of it?
