Students warned after spate of drink-spiking
A “NASTY and predatory” spate of drink-spiking during Freshers’ Week at one of Britain’s top universities is being investigated by police.
Students have been told not to leave their drinks unattended “even for a minute”, while at least three incidents at Bristol University are examined.
A “Circus Party” took place at the Wills Hall bar on Monday, where at least one incident took place. Two more have since been reported.
Substances used to spike drinks can cause nausea and unsteadiness or even knock people out. None of the victims who reported the spiking is believed to be in a serious condition.
Simon Bray, the university’s director of residential and hospitality services, said: “It goes without saying that this type of behaviour is not acceptable. We’re offering support to those affected and would urge anyone with concerns or information to speak to their warden or a senior resident.
“We take a zero-tolerance approach to criminal behaviour and any student found to be spiking drinks will be reported to the police and will be subject to our internal disciplinary measures.”
Prof Robert Vilain, the warden of Wills Hall, said: “It is nasty, predatory behaviour, and those who do it are beneath contempt. Do not leave drinks unattended, even for a minute.”
