Australian ex-pm attacked in Hobart

Tony Abbott, the former Australian prime minister, was struck by a protester on a campaign walkabout over same-sex marriage.

Mr Abbott was yesterday in Hobart, Tasmania, talking to people opposed to gay marriage when he was hit.

A vote on same-sex marriage is under way with a result expected on Nov 15. Australia is one of the last western economies where same sex marriage is illegal.
