Amateur boxers are safer in a regulated ring
sir – Nick Harding (Features, September 20) is correct to highlight the physical and mental benefits of amateur boxing.
The sport is also much safer than most people understand.
However, I would not recommend “white-collar” or unlicensed boxing to those wishing to take up the sport.
There are more than 800 amateur boxing clubs affiliated to England Boxing.
At these clubs beginners will find qualified volunteer coaches, who will teach the art with care – and never allow a boxer in a ring until they are completely ready.
They will also never match a boxer against another of significantly different weight, skill or experience.
It is only through careful regulation that we can keep the sport safe.
