Uber under attack

- Tom Wells Charles Allen

SIR – As an ex-londoner who has used Uber within the past year in Switzerland, the US, Brazil, Japan and Singapore, I am appalled by Transport for London’s decision not to renew Uber’s licence to operate in the capital (report, September 23).

To me, despite its widely publicised governance issues, Uber represents the best of the potential of communications and technology to deliver choice, value and security to ordinary people, as well as an end to the power of self-interested but outmoded elites such as London’s black cab drivers.

Basel, Switzerland

SIR – Using technology to reduce the cost of operating a business has been perfectly acceptable since the mechanisation of the factories during the Industrial Revolution.

The problem with Uber is that its licence depends on clear regulations. The company knew the deadline, knew that Transport for London had concerns and yet failed to make the necessary improvements.

Compliance is a key part of any business, and in many cases the red tape is beneficial to public safety.
