SIR – Michael Deacon’s piece on teaching his son the alphabet (September 23) reminded me of a family game of I Spy in which my daughter Emily, then aged four, chose “something beginning with ‘L’”.

After a long time going through every possibility, we all had to concede defeat. She triumphantly announced that the answer was “elbow”.
