A 30-year-old Australian feared she may have cancer after noticing painful lumps in her armpit. However, doctors at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney found them to be harmless and concluded the lumps were caused by a reaction to her tattoos. Doctors have known for some time that tattoo ink travels to the lymph nodes and can cause swelling of the nodes, but their new findings show the effect can happen more than a decade later.

It is thought up to a third of young people in Britain now have a tattoo.
