What Hefner sold

- Ann Farmer

SIR – Rowan Pelling (Features, October 1) says the late Hugh Hefner “supported progressive social movements” backing “abortions on demand, LGBT campaigns and the Civil Rights Movement”.

Hefner backed abortion because the sexual revolution functions by destroying the inconvenient results of commitment-free sex. He agreed with abortion-supporting “feminists” like Betty Friedan and Margaret Atwood.

But modern feminism was actually a reaction to the libertarian malecentred commodification of women. The marketing of the objectified body parts of women in pornography led to the selling of the actual body parts of unborn babies by the abortion industry.

Hefner was regressive, not progressive. But he glamorised his twisted philosophy by airbrushing out its victims. Despite his “playmates” he died a lonely old man clinging only to his immense fortune.
