Top obstetrician says abortion law is outdated
Women should be given easier access to abortions, the country’s leading obstetrician has said.
Calling for a relaxation of the law, Prof Lesley Regan said that nurses and midwives should be authorised to give women termination pills for unwanted pregnancies.
Under the Abortion Act 1967, women requesting an abortion must first receive consent from two doctors.
But Prof Regan, the president of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), claims the law is outdated and is placing timeconsuming barriers in the way of women seeking terminations.
