Corbyn narrows gap in polls

- By Ashley Kirk and Jack Maidment

JEREMY CORBYN has narrowed the gap with Theresa May over who voters believe would make the best Prime Minister, with the Tory leader still ahead despite her disastrous conference season, polls show.

A Yougov survey carried out on the day of and the day after Mrs May’s Manchester speech found there was now just a three-point gap between the Tory and Labour leaders, down from eight points two weeks ago. When the public was asked who would make the best prime minister, 36 per cent said Mrs May while 33 per cent backed Mr Corbyn.

Allies of Mrs May will claim she is still viewed as a better option to lead the nation even though she has suffered a damaging week.

For the first nine months of her premiership, Mrs May had a lead of around 30 points over Mr Corbyn. The general election marked a turning point at which the Labour leader’s popularity soared.
