US senator: President could start WW3

- By Rob Crilly in New York

A SENIOR Republican senator has said Donald Trump’s behaviour risks setting America “on the path to World War Three”, laying bare the concerns of the party’s establishment wing as he trades bitter public barbs with the President.

Bob Corker, the chairman of the influential Senate Foreign Relations Committee, was once considered a possible Secretary of State and an ally of Mr Trump.

But, after announcing he would not be seeking reelection next year, he found himself under attack by the President at the weekend, blamed for the Iran nuclear deal in a series of tweets.

Mr Corker fired back. “It’s a shame the White House has become an adult day care centre,” he wrote. “Someone obviously missed their shift this morning.”

Then in an interview with The New York Times, he said he was concerned Mr Trump was treating the White House “like he’s doing The Apprentice or something”. ♦ Melania Trump’s office issued an extraordinary statement slapping down Ivana Trump after she joked that her status as the president’s first wife effectively made her first lady. The message from the White House made clear there was room for only one first lady. “There is clearly no substance to this statement from an ex. Unfortunately only attention seeking and self-serving noise,” said Stephanie Grisham, Mrs Trump’s spokesman.
