‘No deal’ Brexit hand

-

SIR – I am delighted that Mrs May is prepared to put a “no deal” card on the negotiating table as Brexit talks continue (report, October 10).

The EU would like our money and a trade deal. Britain just wants a trade deal, so it has the stronger hand.

I suggest that Michel Barnier discusses the weakness of his position with the heads of BMW, Mercedes, VW, Neff, Miele, Peugeot, Michelin, Lafarge, Renault, Siemens, Prada, Pirelli, Bosche, LVMH et al, before again denying that the negotiating ball is on the EU’S side of the net. Shaun Whyte

SIR – You reported that Mr Barnier has spoken with Jeremy Corbyn and Sir Keir Starmer, ostensibly to determine what Labour’s position might be in the event of a change of government in this country.

However, given that Mr Corbyn’s position seems to change almost as often and as quickly as he changes his socks, I suspect that Mr Barnier will eventually realise that Labour has no set policy, at which point he will know that he is wasting his time. As a result, he will be only too pleased to sit down to some serious discussion with David Davis, who, with his team of negotiators, will be in a position of some considerable strength.

It makes me wonder if the Prime Minister has managed to deploy Mr Corbyn as a secret weapon in the Brexit negotiations. David Costigan
