Socks education
SIR – There is nothing new in the letter from Timothy Sellors (October 9) proposing that needlework be taught in schools.
As a nine-year-old evacuee at school in Berkshire, I knitted socks for sailors – although admittedly they were simply tubes closed at one end, with no heels, so the mariners may not have been overjoyed. I was also taught to darn socks – a useful skill because my wife detests that task. Charles Keil
