S Africa activist’s fall was murder

Ahmed Timol, an antiapartheid activist, did not jump from the 10th floor of a South African police station in 1971 but was pushed, a judge ruled yesterday.

The landmark decision by Judge Billy Mothle paves the way for dozens of criminal inquiries into suspicious deaths – then described as “suicides” – of activists detained in that era.
