Ahmed Ti­mol, an an­ti­a­partheid ac­tivist, did not jump from the 10th floor of a South African po­lice sta­tion in 1971 but was pushed, a judge ruled yes­ter­day.

The land­mark de­ci­sion by Judge Billy Mothle paves the way for dozens of crim­i­nal in­quiries into sus­pi­cious deaths – then de­scribed as “sui­cides” – of ac­tivists de­tained in that era.
