Tip-top train service
SIR – Last week, my wife and I undertook a rail journey from Crewe to Portsmouth – a round trip of 430 miles. We travelled in standard class on London Midland and South West Trains services.
Fares were reasonable and every train arrived and left on time. Seats were comfortable, the carriages were litter-free, bins had been recently emptied and the loos were a credit to those who maintained them.
Noticeboards at the stations were informative and lifts or escalators were available for passengers at every station. The ticket collectors were efficient and friendly, as were the trolley service staff. In every case, station staff were very helpful.
We have also experienced the same level of service with Virgin Trains.
Jeremy Corbyn has said that, if he is elected, his government will nationalise the railways.
Which of the above features we experienced would he improve, and how? Allan Littlemore
