Money well spent

-

As of midnight, the old round £1 coin ceased to be legal tender. Any still lurking down the back of the sofa or discovered rattling around in a winter jacket not worn for months will be worthless. Some retailers are still prepared to take them for a few days yet, not least because their removal from circulation has apparently caught many unawares, even if it has been obvious from the gradual introduction of the new 12-sided coin. It is estimated that £500 million worth of old coins may still be out there in jars, piggy banks and purses across the land. Since they can still be deposited with banks or building societies, this is surely a bonanza for charities. Our old pounds should go to a good cause, not fade away.
