Caliphate conquered The rise and fall of Isil

-

At the peak of its power in late 2014, Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) controlled 40,000 sq miles of territory on both sides of the Iraq-syria border. Today, the jihadist group’s territory has been cut to less than 12,000sq miles.

Whereas once, 10 million people lived under Isil’s self-proclaimed Caliphate, it now controls tens of thousands. It no longer holds any major cities in Iraq or Syria.

The CIA estimated in late 2014 that Isil had up to 31,500 fighters. Years of fighting and difficulties in bringing in new recruits means it is now down to a few thousand.

Isil’s business model has also been severely damaged. It once boasted revenues of $81 million (£62million) a month. Now its revenues are less than $16 million a month, according to IHS Markit analysis.
