Fewer MPS, please
SIR – You report (October 17) that both Tory and Labour MPS are likely to vote against the proposed constituency boundary changes.
MPS should be reminded that these changes are not meant to even out the votes politically, but are intended to allow fairer representation for voters.
How can it be right that we on the Isle of Wight, with more than 110,000 voters, have the same representation (one MP) as a constituency in the Western Isles with less than 25,000?
If all constituencies were brought up to 100,000 voters, it would reduce the number of MPS by about 200. A hundred MPS could then be appointed according to parties’ national voting percentage, with names taken from party lists, as in the European elections. With no constituency responsibilities, these MPS would have more time for committee work or as ministers or party spokesmen.
