Rumoured to have died months ago, Jiang Zemin, the former Chinese president, roused social media users yesterday by appearing at the congress.

The 91-yearold sat next to Xi Jinping and stood for the national anthem. Internet users gushed over the “Frog” – a nickname inspired by his wide grin and prominent, spectacled eyes – marvelling over the hale appearance of the nonagenari­an (below), who was president for 10 years from 1993. “How many organs must he have had replaced… to be there?” asked one posting.
