Sons of murdered Maltese journalist attack corruption on island

- By Nick Squires in Rome

THE three sons of Daphne Caruana Galizia, the murdered Maltese journalist, have demanded the resignation of the country’s prime minister, as it emerged that the car bomb that killed her was probably triggered by a mobile phone signal. Investigators believe the bomber had visual contact with her car as she left her home in the village of Bidnija on Monday and waited until the Peugeot was clear of other houses before detonating the device.

The journalist’s sons launched a stinging attack on Joseph Muscat, Mal- ta’s prime minister, saying finding their mother’s killer would mean nothing unless it went hand-in-hand with rooting out corruption and money-laundering on the Mediterranean island.

Matthew, Andrew and Paul Caruana Galizia also refused to back a €1 million (£890,000) reward to find the killer offered by the Maltese government. They said that Malta had been “devoured by the criminal and the corrupt”.

The killing has shone a spotlight on Malta’s tax haven status, alleged links with organised crime and the shady dealings of an island that most Britons regard as a sunny holiday destination.
