Nelson’s stolen Turkish military award replicated

-

A replica of Lord Nelson’s jewelled chelengk is to go on display at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. The military decoration of 300 diamonds was given to Nelson after the Battle of the Nile in 1798. He was the first non-muslim to receive the honour.

It was stolen from the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich in 1951 reportedly by an infamous cat burglar, George ‘Taters’ Chatham, who sold it “for a few thousand pounds”.

Nelson poses with the chelengk on top of his column in Trafalgar Square.
