Woman claims sense of humour got her the sack
AN EMPLOYEE at BP sacked from her £87,000 job “because of her sense of humour” was told “women simply aren’t funny” by her female boss, a tribunal heard.
Kathryn Buttle, the only female surveyor in her team, claimed her boss told her having a sense of humour was not an asset for a woman.
The 38-year-old was made redundant in 2016. She is challenging the company at an employment tribunal claiming unfair dismissal, sexual discrimination.
She said she was bullied by the men and felt unable to do her job properly.
When she shared her concerns with her superior, Herlinde Mannaerts-drew, she was told that some staff members did not appreciate her personality.
Miss Buttle, from Reading, Berks, said her boss told her that “because I was a woman I should conceal my sense of humour”. The tribunal continues.
