Freed Hong Kong activists vow to fight on

- By Neil Connor

HONG KONG activists Joshua Wong and Nathan Law promised to keep up their fight for democracy after they were freed on bail yesterday.

They were jailed in August for their part in mass protests in the former Brit- ish colony in 2014 which brought the city to a standstill.

Concerns are rising in Hong Kong as Beijing tightens its political grip, eroding freedoms that are supposedly guaranteed under the “one country, two systems” rule. Mr Wong, aged 21, became the face of the 2014 protests, known as the Umbrella Movement. Mr Law, 24, was Hong Kong’s youngest lawmaker last year before he was disqualified by authorities.

Outside court, Mr Wong said he would keep working “to fight for democracy. The government can lock up our bodies but cannot lock up our minds.” The pair were reportedly asked to post 50,000 Hong Kong dollars (£4,900) for bail.
