Greg Davies’s deliciously over-thetop manchild comedy makes a welcome return for a fourth series. With his hulking frame, Davies is particularly good in this type of man-bumbling-angrily-through-life role, and his slightly more restrained antics as put-upon father Ken in BBC Three’s sitcom Cuckoo (also due back for a fourth series) saw him nominated for a Bafta among other awards.

In this opener, it’s all change as fortysomething adolescent Dan (Davies) has moved on from his detested job as a schoolteacher and is reduced to farm labouring for pocket money and sleeping in his uptight financial adviser friend Brian’s (co-writer Mike Wozniak) spare room. This is not an ideal situation with his pregnant girlfriend Emma (Jeany Spark) about to arrive home from America to give birth, as Dan is still convinced he’ll be allowed to play an active role in his impending fatherhood. Meanwhile, Dan’s mum (Gwyneth Powell) and Aunt Nesta (Stephanie Cole) have sold the family home and moved into a luxury retirement village. If only he could find a way to force them to give him, as he sees it, his share of the proceeds all would be well, wouldn’t it? Gerard O’donovan
