Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) ITV4, 9.00PM ★★★★

Megalomaniac media baron Elliot Carver (Jonathan Pryce) tries to provoke a global war in order to increase viewing figures and international sales of his news company, but is frustrated by Pierce Brosnan’s Bond, who finds allies in the shape of Michelle Yeoh and Teri Hatcher. It may not be the best of the Bond films, but it’s familiar, flashy and, most importantly, enjoyable.

The Outsiders (1983) LONDON LIVE, 10.00PM ★★★

This adaptation of SE Hinton’s coming-of-age novel features a veritable galaxy of up-and-coming Brat Pack stars. Matt Dillon, Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze, Emilio Estevez, Tom Cruise, and Ralph Macchio play the members of a rural teenage gang whose rivalry with another gang turns deadly. Despite the realism of the source material, director Francis Ford Coppola takes an overly stylised approach to what should be a grittier film.

United 93 (2006) ITV4, 11.25PM ★★★★

Director Paul Greengrass’s boneshaking, real-time take on the final hours of the United Airlines plane whose passengers rebelled against their hijackers on September 11, 2001 feels uncomfortably realistic. Greengrass, whose signature rapid cutting made the second and third Bourne films so exciting, proves expert at handling the most infamous atrocity of modern times with intelligence and sobriety.
