‘Selfish’ tourists are a boon to Africa’s economy

-

sir – Lola Olufemi’s assertion (report, October 25) that people who holiday in Africa are “inherently selfish” and that gapyear volunteers “fetishise” African culture is nonsense.

Those who take safari holidays in Africa collectively contribute millions of pounds to host countries’ economies. Tourist money supports builders, thatchers, plumbers, engineers, game wardens, safari drivers and trackers, camp cooks and domestic workers, airline staff, and car hire and bus companies.

Thousands of Africans will testify to this and tell you how much they appreciate the business the safari industry brings to their communities.

A similar number will say how much they welcome and appreciate the good work that volunteer aid workers do.
