Early warning system to avoid being Trumped
The Foreign Office was so concerned about Donald Trump’s unpredictability that officials considered an early warning system to avoid being caught out by his tweets, it has emerged.
Within days of Mr Trump taking office, civil servants were being caught unawares by major announcements from the White House, in particular, the executive order of Jan 27 banning people from seven Muslim-majority countries. Emails released to the BBC under the Freedom of Information Act show that an official suggested “a system for assessing impact of the orders on UK interests and offering quick advice on what to do about it” to Whitehall departments.
