SIR – Allister Heath (Comment, October 26) points out that the grip of the Left on universiti­es has changed them into places where “words no longer have any objective, intrinsic meaning; what matters is how others feel subjective­ly about them”.

The reason why the Left places so much emphasis on subjectivi­ty is that if you look at things objectivel­y – that is, by reference to fact – the Left loses all the arguments.

Subjectivi­ty allows the Left to ignore inconvenie­nt truths by redefining what truth is. The justificat­ion for this is, of course, their high moral purpose.

History, however, shows that you cannot build a better world by disregardi­ng reality. Sadly, it may take a Corbyn government and its concomitan­t disasters to teach the young this. Alexander Pelling
