Pitch Perfect (2012) E4, 9.00PM ★★

 The world of collegiate a cappella singing contests can’t be as heartless as Jason Moore’s sour comedy would have us believe. Anna Kendrick stars as Beca, an angst-ridden outsider who must shake up her uninspiring and monotonous group, while trying to handle how weird they all are. And, of course, there’s a handsome young man (Skylar Astin) who catches her eye. It’s a little like Glee but without the schmaltz.

Horrible Bosses (2011) ITV2, 9.00PM ★★★

 This black comedy directed by Seth Gordon, follows the travails of three friends who conspire to murder their bosses after deciding that their employers are having an overbearing and abusive effect on them. With an unoriginal plot and jokes which have been labelled as racist, homophobic and misogynist, the film’s only redeeming feature is its cast, including Jason Bateman, Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell and Kevin Spacey.

Last Man Standing (1996) ITV4, 11.00PM ★★

 Prohibition-era Texas is the backdrop for this moody remake of Kurosawa’s Yojimbo, starring Bruce Willis as a drifting gun-for hire caught up in the middle of an ongoing war between the Irish and Italian mafias. It’s relatively cheerless but the (many) gunfights are handled with panache and Christopher Walken’s psychotic enforcer Hickey is a Hollywood bad guy you won’t forget in a hurry.
