‘Train robbery’ pub steals march on rivals

-

A VILLAGE pub where the Great Train Robbery is said to have been planned has been named Pub of the Year.

The Pointer, a charming 18th century red-brick inn in Brill, Bucks, topped a list of more than 470 pubs across the UK and Ireland celebrated in the 2018 Michelin Eating Out in Pubs guide.

The pub, a former barn, is two miles from Leatherslade Farm, where the 15-strong gang hid after their £2.6 million raid on a Royal Mail train at Bridego Railway Bridge, Ledburn, in August 1963. Legend has it that the gang, led by Bruce Reynolds, planned the robbery at the pub and divided up the money there, too.

Rebecca Burr, guide editor, said: “Not only is it a delightful place, but it is exceedingly well run by a young, personable team.”
