Olivia Colman: the queen of the small screen

-

Ihave mixed feelings about Olivia Colman taking over from Claire Foy as the Queen in series three and four of The Crown. On the one hand, she’s terrific and I loved her in Fleabag. On the other, I always find change disconcerting.

It reminds me of those longrunning soaps that used to replace characters overnight and hope we wouldn’t notice. I remember watching in abject horror as Pippa in Home and Away appeared as a totally different person one day and none of her family seemed to think anything was awry. They did the same thing with Hayley and Emma in The Archers, and then there was the deeply confusing time when the actress who played Clarrie Grundy left, only to be replaced by another actress who had played Clarrie Grundy before her. Baffling.

I’m sure Colman will be great, but I just don’t know who to trust any more.
