Putting the baby first

- Susan Oakley

SIR – Diane Munday (Features, October 26) did not feel “regret” or “guilt” over her abortion, but she does not speak for everyone.

As a psychotherapist I often see clients (not all female) who bitterly regret a decision to abort a child 10, 20 or even 30 years ago. They have had to live with a decision that affected their lives, relationships and mental health.

Nowadays this unhappy situation is presented as a black-and-white issue: have the baby or have an abortion. What about returning to the unselfish thing to do: carry the baby to term and allow a loving family to adopt?
