Jaqueline Du Pré, one of the great cellists of the 20th century, died 30 years ago this month after a long struggle with multiple sclerosis. Today, at London’s Royal Festival Hall, Du Pré’s widower Daniel Barenboim conducts the West-eastern Divan Orchestra through a pair of cello-led pieces, in a tribute concert that promises to be both poignant and musically invigorating. On the programme are Strauss’s mischievous tone poem, Don Quixote, in which the cello plays the lead role, and Tchaikovsky’s rousing Symphony No. 5.

It’s written by the Whitbread Prize-winning Hilary Spurling, abridged for radio by Sara Davies, and read by Hattie Morahan.
