Keep faith on Radio 4

-

SIR – I thank the Almighty for Tim Stanley (“Why do they think it’s OK to bash the God slot? I think they are jealous”, Comment, October 31) and the BBC spokesman who said Thought for the Day will continue on Radio 4.

Why should John Humphrys and some others on the Today team insult Christians and those of other faiths in such a derogatory way? Everyone has the right to believe or not believe, but equally everyone should respect the views of others and refrain from making insensitive comments. Marianna, Viscountess Monckton of Brenchley

SIR – Thought for the Day has been unfairly maligned. I assert that not out of vested interest as a member of the clergy but because of its two outstanding features.

First, it is often the one positive element amid a slew of stories about scandals, corruption and incompetence which, however true, are a depressing start to the morning.

Secondly, it focuses on values, and reinforces the reason for trying to live as ethically as possible, whatever tasks we are each facing. Far from being time for a tea break, it is a chance to recoup some sanity and direction. Rabbi Dr Jonathan Romain Maidenhead, Berkshire
