SIR – Rather than throwing away packets of dried Tunisian dates that “may occasional­ly contain insects” (Letters, November 1), WG Marshall should appreciate the added protein they contain.

The Food and Agricultur­e Organisati­on of the United Nations has recently recommende­d insects as a highly nutritious source of protein with a much smaller carbon footprint than meat.

A UK company, Grub, is already selling energy bars that contain both chopped dried dates and insects. Louise Gray
