SIR – I agree with Lesley Wells (Letters, October 27) about noisy fireworks, which seem to go off for weeks either side of November 5. Loud bangs particular­ly disturb our pets, but farm animals, horses and wildlife suffer too.

A solution would be to ban noisy ones in favour of silent ones, which are increasing­ly available. The town of Collecchio in Italy has done just that for the sake of their animals.

If you must have sound too, why not choose music – it worked for Handel. Jane Foddy
