France remembers
SIR – The village in Normandy which still flies the Union flag in memory of the aircrew of the bomber that crashed there (report, November 4) is probably unique. However, in many places in France, there are plaques on deserted country roads commemorating the heroism of British servicemen in connection with local events. In some cases the names of those servicemen are marked on the stone.
It is moving to see that, even today, fresh flowers are regularly placed at the base of many of these plaques in memory of those who perished there.
