Last November, the world was stunned when Donald Trump clinched victory in the US presidential election. Along with that win came the “Trump Bump”, which saw the New York stock market hit record highs following promises to build a wall, bring jobs home, tear up trade treaties and to reform the USA’S Byzantine tax system. But, what has the President accomplished in economic terms since taking office, asks Martin Wolf of the Financial Times, as he wonders whether the promises will be delivered.

It’s surprising to hear that, once upon a time, weather forecasting was thought of as “witchcraft”, but thanks to the ingenuity of sailors, mathematicians and many more besides it became a respected industry. These include chemist Luke Howard who, in the 19th century, revolutionised our understanding of clouds and atmosphere, and “butterfly effect” pioneer Edward Norton Lorenz. Bridget Kendall tells their stories, with help from historians Kristine Harper and Peter Moore, as well as former BBC forecaster Peter Gibbs.
