Military Memory, and the Sacred Space
As we approach Remembrance Sunday, the week is rounded off on a more sombre note with a look back at the 1917 battle of Passchendaele. Giles Fraser considers the families of the fallen soldiers, who will have slowly realised that their husbands, brothers and sons weren’t coming back and that their bodies would remain on the battlefield, now marked by row upon row of simple, white graves. He also considers the role that memorials play in providing a space for mourning.
