Extreme Wives with Kate Humble
BBC TWO, 9.00PM; NOT WALES
An absorbing new series in which Kate Humble explores how the everyday lives of women reflect the values of the societies in which they live. Tonight’s opener takes her to southwest Kenya, home of the Kuria people, a traditional farming community who are polygamous, with men taking a number of wives. But the community also practices an unusual form of woman-to-woman marriage, in which older women wed younger wives and encourage them to get pregnant by men from outside the household. Then, disturbingly, Humble stumbles upon another issue at the heart of this community: female genital mutilation (FGM).
