American accused of Mugabe insult is bailed

The US woman charged with subversion over allegedly insulting Robert Mugabe, the Zimbabwe president, has been freed on £750 bail.

Martha O’donovan and her lawyers did not speak to reporters yesterday as she emerged from jail in Harare, the capital, and left in a US embassy vehicle. The 25-year-old, who will return to court on Wednesday, is accused of calling Mr Mugabe, 93, a “sick man” in a tweet including an image of the president with a catheter.
