Filling in for the Queen

In 1959,

when the Queen was expecting the Duke of York, her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, laid a wreath on her behalf.

In 1961,

when the Queen was in Ghana, the Duke of Gloucester laid a wreath on her behalf.

In 1963,

when the Queen was expecting the Earl of Wessex, the Duke of Edinburgh laid a wreath on her behalf.

In 1968,

when the Queen was in Brazil, the Duke of Kent laid a wreath on her behalf.

In 1983,

the Queen was overseas in Kenya when the Prince of Wales laid a wreath on her behalf.

In 1999,

the Queen laid a wreath at the Cenotaph in Durban during a tour of South Africa, while the Prince of Wales, Duke of York, Princess Royal and Duke of Kent laid their own wreaths in London.

Until now,

she has attended every other year of her reign, laying her own wreath in person.
