D For Dexter RADIO 4, 10.45AM

This serialised drama has been a powerfully affecting fixture of Children in Need week for the last four years – and deservedly won a BBC Audio Drama award in 2016. It follows a brave, self-reliant young girl called Skye (Sydney Wade) as she struggles to look after her little brother Dexter (Alfie Johnson) in the face of grave parental neglect. This year’s five-episode run begins today, with Dexter starting primary school, and Skye – who’s now 14 – anxious to keep social services from taking him away again.

Laura Mvula – God Made Me Funky RADIO 2, 10.00PM

Before she broke out as a songwriter and recording artist, Laurva Mvula was the director of a community gospel choir in Staffordshire – and so knows a thing or two about the ways in which African-american devotional music can inspire. In this new threepart series, Mvula explores the ways in which gospel has shaped and influenced contemporary music over the last 60 years – starting, today, with the Fifties and Sixties, when the likes of Aretha Franklin, James Brown, and Ray Charles began to make records.
