Cross purposes

President Trump looks momentarily perplexed as he takes part in the “ASEAN-WAY handshake” with Tran Dai Quang, the Vietnamese president, left, and Rodrigo Duterte, the president of the Philippines, during the opening ceremony of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in the Philippines yesterday. Aside from the handshake, intended as a show of regional solidarity, the entertainment was provided by Mr Duterte who performed a duet with one of his country’s pop stars.
