Labour trolled me on social media: FGM campaigner

- By Nicola Harley

AN ANTI-FGM campaigner has claimed members of the Labour Party have “trolled” her on social media due to her work with the Conservatives.

Nimco Ali, a Somali campaigner, said that even members of the shadow cabinet had blocked her on Twitter.

“I think because I work with Tory MPS to end female genital mutilation,” she wrote in the Evening Standard. “Many on the Left still believe that FGM is a cultural issue and that we should be ‘talking’ to abusers and prefer to ‘respect’ differences rather than saving girls like me.

“One senior Labour figure once told

‘I have been open to working with anyone in power, but ... the Labour Party has shown little interest’

me they would have to see ‘how it plays out with the mosques’ when I asked him to back me in my fight.”

Miss Ali set up Daughters of Eve in 2010 to help girls at risk of FGM and to push for the practice to be stopped. She has lived in the UK since she was four and underwent the procedure aged seven while on holiday in Djibouti.

She added: “During my campaigning on FGM I have been open to working with anyone in power, but in my experience the Labour Party has shown little interest, while those in the Conservative Party have been quick to respond. From David Cameron to the current Prime Minister, Conservative politicians have demonstrated they care about ending FGM.”

Miss Ali stood as a candidate for the Women’s Equality Party and in June was subjected to threats. She was sent a letter full of racist abuse, signed “Jo Cox” after the murdered Labour MP.
