Police in Nantes, France, fired tear gas to disperse crowds as some of the 170 union-organised protests against the economic reforms of Emmanuel Macron, the French president, turned violent. Masked protesters in Nantes threw missiles and paint at officers. The measures are designed to make it easier for French companies to hire and sack employees and reduce the power of the unions.
