Anyone for cricket? Bug bread hits bakery aisle
The world’s first commercially available insect-based bread has been launched by a Finnish food firm.
The bread, made with flour ground from dried crickets as well as wheat flour and seeds, contains more protein than normal wheat bread. Each loaf contains about 70 crickets and costs 3.99 euros (£3.55).
The demand for diverse and humane food sources has raised interest in using insects as a protein source in several Western countries. Britain already allows insects to be raised and marketed for food use.
