Czech pig farm to be war memorial
The Czech government has signed a contract to buy a pig farm that was once the site of a Nazi holding site for prisoners on their way to Holocaust death camps.
The deal brings an end to a controversy that has dogged successive Czech governments for decades. Prague had faced repeated accusations that leaving the site at Lety, in southern Bohemia, as a pig farm was disrespectful to the victims.
The Czech state will pay more than £15 million to the farm’s owners. The site will then be cleaned up so that a memorial can be built.
