On the hook for Brexit

SIR – The demands from the EU for a huge “divorce” payment have led me to study Article 50 – a very simple set of five rules, totalling just 250 words.

There is nothing referring to making an exit payment. The requirement is to negotiate and reach an agreement for the arrangements for withdrawal, with a focus on agreeing our future relationship with the EU. The ongoing financial blackmail of Britain is not acceptable. Andrew Robinson

SIR – Imagine going to an auction and the auctioneer says: “This is lot 120, can we open the bidding at £2,000?”.

Someone in the room shouts: “What is lot 120, please?”, and the auctioneer replies: “I won’t tell you until the reserve is reached.”
